HTC launches 1.5GHz, 7-inch Android 2.4 Flyer into the tablet wars

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

HTC is entering the tablet arena with quite a bang. The company has just taken the wraps off its brand new 7-inch Flyer Android tablet, which touts a 1.5GHz single-core CPU, 1GB of RAM plus 32GB of flash storage, an aluminum unibody construction, 1024 x 600 resolution, a tablet-optimized version of Sense, and… what’s this, a pressure-sensitive capacitive stylus! The HTC Scribe trademark we saw floating around in legal waters turned out not to be the branding for a tablet, it’s actually the name HTC gives to the technology enabling what it calls a “groundbreaking pen experience.” Other details include a 5 megapixel camera on the back paired with a 1.3 megapixel imager up front, a 4000mAh battery rated to last for four hours of continuous video playback, and memory expandability via a microSD card.

The Flyer will ship in Q2 2011 with Android Gingerbread 2.4 on board. HTC says it’ll be indistinguishable from 2.3 as far the end user is concerned, though we all know it won’t be quite as good as the 3.0 stuff. We’re told not to worry, however, since the new version of Sense being introduced with the Flyer will be the focal point of the company’s software offering. As far as HTC is concerned, Sense matters more than the underlying platform, and the reason Honeycomb isn’t the shipping OS here was explicitly stated as HTC not having enough time with the latest Google code to customize it to the full requirements of Sense. Guess that settles that.

There are a couple more software enhancements, both marking the introduction of the fruits of HTC’s recent deals: OnLive cloud gaming will be coming with the Flyer in the form of an app you open up to access the web-connected bored-relieving service, while that Saffron Digital acquisition has turned into an HTC Watch app for movie streaming and downloading.

We spent a bit of quality time with a Flyer unit recently, although we weren’t allowed to turn it on, and our early impressions are rather mixed. On the one hand, we do appreciate the ruggedness and durability that’s afforded by the one-piece aluminum shell, but on the other, the Flyer is quite the chunky beast in your hands. We’d imagine strapping in such an extra-speedy processor is the main culprit for its extra girth, though the Flyer is, ironically enough, not terribly light either. We found it heavier and generally a lot less polished from a design perspective than Samsung’s Galaxy Tab. Anyhow, HTC should have functional units for us immediately following its MWC presser this morning, and we’ll be delving in deeper with this super-specced device. Hang tight!

Windows Mobile 6.5 got the lion’s share of attention this week at MWC, but HTC’s TouchFLO 3D shell for 6.1 got some interesting interface tweaks for the new Touch Pro2 and Touch Diamond2, and we’d say they’re actually more interesting than 6.5 honeycomb launcher and new unlock screen — especially the newly revised keyboards with haptic feedback. Plenty more screenshots at the read link, and don’t forget to check out our hands-on videos of the Pro2 and Diamond2 if you haven’t already.

T-Mobile getting HTC Rhodium as the Wing II, Sapphire as the G2?

T-Mobile USA has a pretty solid relationship with HTC, considering it sells the Shadow, the Wing, and the G1 at the moment — and seeing how the G1’s doing a nice little spot of business for them, it stand to reason that they’d be looking to continue the good times through ‘09. We’re hearing from TmoNews that one HTC devices leaked today — the Sapphire — is the G2, while another source is telling us that the Rhodium is the Wing II, giving T-Mob solid, high-end Windows Mobile and Android devices alike in the new year. The original Wing is older than your grandmother (bless her heart), and as for the G1… well, let’s be honest, these guys can take as much Android gear as HTC will give ‘em right now. Bring it, fellas.

HTC not done with non-touchscreens yet, brings S743 to US market

We’d never pegged the S740 as the kind of phone HTC would be looking to bring to the New World; it’s an oddball by modern Windows Mobile standards, shucking the touchy, feely trend for a traditional numeric keypad that reminds us of a simpler, more innocent time. Miracles can and do happen from time to time, though — and on that note we give you the S743, a dead ringer for the S740 that’s had its Euro-friendly 3G gutted and replaced with HSDPA 850 / 1900 for North American use. It’s got WinMo 6.1 Standard, a 2.4-inch QVGA display, and faceted styling inspired by the Touch Diamond, but the S743’s real claim to fame is its slide-out QWERTY keyboard for those moments when triple-tapping and predictive text just aren’t going to cut it. Look for this sucker to invade US retailers some time this quarter.

Is this supposed HTC Opal the followup to last year’s trailblazing HTC Touch? According to what looks like an internal HTC document gone viral, the Opal will run HTC’s newest TouchFLO 3D UI band-aid for WinMo 6.1 atop the same TI OMAP 850 proc already powering the Touch. Looking a bit deeper reveals quad-band GSM / EDGE with the same WiFi, MicroSD slot, Bluetooth 2.0, 2 megapixel camera, and 2.8-inch 240 x 320 pixel touchscreen found in the aged Touch handset. Only HTC, with its Touch Diamond, Touch Pro, Dream, and Xperia X1 can force a flagship device down-market so quickly.
HTC Opal Specifications:
* Networks GSM / GPRS / EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 MHz;
* Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional OS;
* TI OMAP 850 processor, 200 MHz;

* 2.8? QVGA touchscreen;
* 2Mpix camera;
* Wi-Fi 802.11b / g, Bluetooth 2.0;

Ok I know I dissed the design of the recently leaked photo’s of what most people are accepting as the HTC Dream or the first Android phone expected to be launched on T-Mobile. So when new images surface, and they look this good, it is the sort of shock that is life threatening if you’re sleep walking.
Now this is stunning, dubbed the BlackStone it fit’s exactly the Dream’s design. Something doesn’t quite add up though.

HTC wars: Touch Pro, Touch Diamond and S740 go head to head

Now that the cat’s out of the bag it was no trouble tracking down HTC’s S740 this morning, and just for kicks we rammed the phone up against the Touch Pro, which we subsequently rammed against the Touch Diamond and an iPhone for a generally violent display of smartphone force. It is worth noting that while the S740’s keys are similar to the Touch Pro’s, they’re not quite as deep or clicky, which leads to a rather sub-par typing experience by HTC’s standards. That glossy mirror finish on the phone screens isn’t doing them any favors either — even when wiped smudge free it seems to impede viewing — and we must say the Touch Pro’s matte finish makes the Diamond and iPhone 3G look cheap in comparison. Oh, and when asked about the Dream, the HTC rep quickly replied “we don’t know anything.” It was worth a shot, right?
