10 megapixel camera phones, or more, HD video on your mobi and even speech recognition GPS technology… these were amongst the bold promises being made by LG at a London gathering this week.
The phone manufacturer invited a select few journalists to have a chat about converging technology – focusing on its new KC-910 mobile phone – which, as well as having an 8 megapixel camera, also offers a whole host of image and video editing tools, Dolby sound and DivX compatibility. (more…)

The Touch-screen phone market is getting crowded. While HTC is trying to catch up Apple’s iPhone with HTC Touch phones, another Taiwanaese company, Asustek is set to launch Asus P552w touch-sceen phone that looks very alike to HTC Touch.

The P552w, which was unveiled on September 5, features the latest Asustek-grown 3D touch user interface, the Glide, which is able to perform functions similar to the HTC-grown 3D TouchFLO technology, the noted the observers.
Asustek is expected to start volume shipments of the P552w in the fourth quarter of this year, compared to the first quarter of this year as originally planned, the observers indicated.

With HTC already shipping over three million HTC Touch phones and another one million HTC Diamond phones, Asustek’s pricing and its strategy to cooperate with telecom operators will be critical to the success of the P552w, said the industry watchers.

In the meanwhile, HTC is set to launch HTC Opal, a 3G version of HTC Touch phone. The HTC Opal is powered by Texas Instruments (TI) OMAP 850 200MHz processor and is running on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, which is identical to the OS of the Asus P552w, indicated the observers.

How would you change OpenMoko’s Neo FreeRunner?

We know — it takes time to really dig deep within an open-source device (particularly a handset), but now that a few months have ticked by since OpenMoko’s Neo FreeRunner began shipping in North America, we figured there was never a better time to ask how your experience has been. The unorthodox mobile isn’t for the faint of heart (or the technology-challenged, truthfully), but for the hackers and tinkerers out there who splurged for one in hopes of finding their new favorite toy, how have things been? Is the interface friendly enough? Are there too many limitations? Is the design to your liking? Give it to us straight down in comments below — how would you change this purty piece of Linux-infused kit?

We’ve known for what feels like ages that Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X1 would be based on Windows Mobile, but we wouldn’t count on the X2, X3 or X99 to just follow suit. At the launch of its digital marketing campaign for said handset, the firm made clear that future SE Xperia phones may not be based on Microsoft’s OS, with Magnus Andersson, product manager for the X1, noting that the brand is not tied into any specific technical platform. Unfortunately, he didn’t elaborate nor give any indication what other systems we could eventually see, but at least we know that there will be life after the X1 in one form or another, right?

3M reveals MPro110 pocket projector

It’s official: the age of the pico projector has arrived. And we’re not talking the age of pico projector announcements, we’re talking about launches. Just after Toshiba came clean with its LED Pico Projector, along comes 3M (of all companies) with one of its own. The MPro110 pocket beamer got handled by PopSci, and the results were pretty much as we’d expect. Decently bright, extraordinarily novel, but not exactly world-class. Brightness (the lack thereof, actually) was an issue, and a few movie scenes were deemed “indecipherable.” Additionally, it has no built-in speaker, but for just $359, we suppose that’s an omission we can live with. Best of all, this one’s set to ship on September 30th. To America. Woo!

The Research In Motion, the maker of Blackberry, RIM’s long-awaited BlackBerry flip phone has finally arrived, weighing just 3.6-ounces and boasting a 320 x 240 internal display, Bluetooth 2.0, built-in multimedia player, 802.11b/g WiFi and a SureType keypad. The battery promises four hours of talk time / over a fortnight of standby life, and while pricing and exact release details are still hush-hush, Americans can count on seeing it “this fall” exclusively on T-Mobile. In related news, RIM also announced support for AIM / ICQ on all BlackBerry smartphones, though it’s only available for USers at the moment.

Is this supposed HTC Opal the followup to last year’s trailblazing HTC Touch? According to what looks like an internal HTC document gone viral, the Opal will run HTC’s newest TouchFLO 3D UI band-aid for WinMo 6.1 atop the same TI OMAP 850 proc already powering the Touch. Looking a bit deeper reveals quad-band GSM / EDGE with the same WiFi, MicroSD slot, Bluetooth 2.0, 2 megapixel camera, and 2.8-inch 240 x 320 pixel touchscreen found in the aged Touch handset. Only HTC, with its Touch Diamond, Touch Pro, Dream, and Xperia X1 can force a flagship device down-market so quickly.
HTC Opal Specifications:
* Networks GSM / GPRS / EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 MHz;
* Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional OS;
* TI OMAP 850 processor, 200 MHz;
* 256 MB ROM, 128 MB RAM, microSD slot;
* 2.8? QVGA touchscreen;
* 2Mpix camera;
* Wi-Fi 802.11b / g, Bluetooth 2.0;
* HTC ExtUSB connector;
* Lithium-Ion battery capacity 1100 mAh

New E-Newspaper Reader Echoes Look of the Paper

Later today, Plastic Logic will be showing off its new e-newspaper reader (name, undecided) for the first time. The black and white, E Ink device features a wireless link to download content, room enough to store “hundreds of pages of newspapers, books, and documents,” and a display more than twice the size of the wee Kindle while suffering just half the ugly. Better yet, the device is said to use “flexible, lightweight plastic” rather than glass resulting in a reader about one-third the thickness of the Kindle at about the same weight — the reader itself (pictured left) looks rigid compared to that flexible display Plastic Logic has demonstrated in the past. Expected to go on sale during the first half of 2009 with more details, including which news organizations will feed information to the reader, promised for CES in January.

Ok I know I dissed the design of the recently leaked photo’s of what most people are accepting as the HTC Dream or the first Android phone expected to be launched on T-Mobile. So when new images surface, and they look this good, it is the sort of shock that is life threatening if you’re sleep walking.
Now this is stunning, dubbed the BlackStone it fit’s exactly the Dream’s design. Something doesn’t quite add up though.
